I write about the initial ideas I have for my Beat City project. The different engines I can use, and approached I can take to fit the theme.

I would do Programming, just because that’s the path I want to excel down, and I’ll be using this Unit to further develop my programming skills, specifically in Unreal Engine 4 using Blueprints and C++ - I want to use UE4 & C++ because I feel like it would build up my knowledge of programming more, but I do see a negative in using these as I’ll be learning a whole new language for a short project, and I could come across problems during production which would put me back, which means I could produce a game which is not of good quality, I would much rather learn C++ in my own time without any time constraints
I would make a very simple platformer game, I would be much more comfortable working with a platformer game since they’re simple to make, and I need to start with something simple if I am using C++.
I would go with a vaporwave style for my game, so whites mixed with pinks and purples and blues, I would make these colours vibrant with a hint of pastel, this game would be 3D and have some very basic models in it which I would have to make sure match the vaporwave style, so this would involve models of statues, but ultimately I want to make this game look cute and retro.
The mechanics I want to apply to this game is, I want to make a nice looking platformer, and focus more on getting the game to work, I do think it would be nice to have cutscenes, which show what door you’ve opened when you’ve clicked on a button.
I would do Programming, just because that’s the path I want to excel down, and I’ll be using this Unit to further develop my programming skills, specifically in Unity using C# - I want to use these because I feel the most comfortable using Unity and C# I feel like I can produce a much more polished and finished-looking piece using Unity, and I can add more to my project or have even more time to add to my blog, so I would be under less pressure and thus produce a better end project, there is also a lot of Indie studios which use Unity as well so it’s more to add to my portfolio which would cater towards those studios.
I would like to make a dungeon crawler where the main player is a virus defeater, and the player runs through the linear dungeons defeating bugs and viruses until they get to the final boss at the end which is a huge virus, this game would be a 3D game with very basic 3D models since I don’t want to pursue in 3D modelling, I would rather just stick with staying basic, but I won’t be using free assets for this, I would make my own basic low-poly 3D models and take advantage of the colour pallets and post processing to make my game look good.
I would base this game off of the Outrun & Cyberspace theme which I done research on, I would use the same blacks mixed with vibrant red, blues, purples and pinks to achieve a bright outrun feel to my game, I would also make use of girds and neon lights to make my game look even more Outrun style.
The mechanics I’ve always wanted to implement into my games is progressive music, I want the player to think, and know they’ve progressed further in the game when they can hear the music build up, or when they can hear the music glitch out more, or when they can hear the music getting louder, this is so I can get the players attention and so they will play even more, determined to go further in the game and they KNOW they’ve gone further because of the music.
I would do Art, even though this isn’t the path I want to go down, I feel my portfolio needs bigger art pieces so I’ll use this Unit to develop some concept art and final art pieces which can be displayed on the art section of my portfolio.
I would love to make an 80’s/90’s style cyberpunk art piece, similar to the art seen in Akira, I absolutely love the style of this movie, since it is an Anime which is hand drawn and is 25 frames per second, which is amazing for an anime made in the 1980’s, I love the look of this movie, and I want to implement it in my own piece and make some sort of dystopian styled bright futuristic feeling character art for a cyberpunk themed zombie apocalypse, since I feel like not many people have mixed those two themes together before. I’m very heavily inspired by the motorbikes in Akira and how they’re very sleek and really nice looking, my character would be some sort of cyberpunk survivor in a biker gang, and I would make that obvious my exaggerating those characteristics.
I would make concept art pieces for this character and then I would make some sort of game/movie poster of him in some ruined cyberpunk city.
I would love to make a Outrun style game similar to Ace Combat, StarFox and Sonic Games, I would also love to make it a racing game too.
There are lots of things I could do with a game like this, I was also inspired by the light trails moodboard which I made, I can apply light trails to planes and any moving vehicle if I make a game with one, this would all be about making a game which the player could fully immerse themselves into, similar to the 2nd idea.
The style of the game would be similar to Thumper- with the bright vibrant colours contrasting with the black background, which is seen in a lot of Outrun photos, and the music would be the same, upbeat and fun.
I want to make it so the music affects the game, there could be a huge city which changes due to the music, and the player has to fly around and collect coins, or race, but they have to be careful of the buildings which burst up and down in time with the sound of the music in the background, this game sounds like it would be great fun to play, but I’m not sure about the production of it and it would be a challenge to make that work, another thing I could do is I can make it so the buildings could launch the player up into the air, and the player isn’t a plane or a car or a motorbike, they could just be a bouncy person. And I could make this into a racing game or a coin-collecting game.
